Where Focused
minds meet

United Kingdom

As one of the world's main financial centres, London is a key market for Clifford Chance and has been since 1802.

As one of the world’s main financial centres, London continues to be a key market and many of our global deals are led from what is still one of the world’s main financial centres in Canary Wharf. We have London roots that go back past the firm’s beginnings in 1987 to the early 1800s.

Today, as we have done for the last 200 years, we work closely with domestic and international corporates, financial institutions, regulators and government and public-sector bodies.

What makes Clifford Chance different?

First, our collaborative and adaptable culture. We work together across borders, languages and legal systems, sharing insights and expertise to achieve our clients’ commercial goals. Secondly, we are pioneers, working on many ground-breaking deals.

Finally, it is the nature of our people. Highly professional and self-assured, with an entrepreneurial streak, our people are more than happy to share their expertise and knowledge. It is interesting and challenging work.

Our Canary Wharf offices

Our Canary Wharf offices offer, we believe, one of the best working environments in London.

But it is the additional things we offer, designed to enhance the well-being of everyone here, which really make our office stand out, with first-class facilities which range from a multi-faith prayer room, music practice rooms, wellness and fitness centre complete with swimming pool, to on-site hairdresser and in-house dining and café.

Restaurant, delicatessen and bar

Our fifth-floor in-house restaurant offers a wide menu. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner during the working week. The inclusion of a few large-screen televisions has proved popular, especially during major sporting events. For those in a hurry, there is a also a delicatessen offering take-away sandwiches and snacks.

We also have a function space with a bar called the Budgie which opens on a Thursday and Friday, serving food and drink with lovely views over Canary Wharf.

Fitness centre

The Fitness Centre in our Upper Bank Street office features a large gym which is fully equipped with a range of cardiovascular and resistance machines. It is staffed by health and lifestyle trainers who can advise on tailored exercise programmes.

There is a 20x8 metre swimming pool which, like the gym, features floor-to- ceiling windows with views out over Canary Wharf. A range of fitness classes are offered in our two aerobics studios.

We also have the facilities to offer treatments including physiotherapy and osteopathy.

Discretionary benefits and in-house services

If you join our London office, you can also expect to enjoy a comprehensive benefits package – one that includes:

  • Free on-site gym membership
  • Subsidised catering service
  • Pension scheme
  • Life assurance
  • Private healthcare scheme and health screening
  • Dental plan
  • Season ticket loan
  • Cycle-to-work scheme
  • Employee assistance programme

Around Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf itself affords a great range of leisure opportunities. There are plenty of restaurants, shops and bars in the area. And, despite the large working population, there are plenty of open spaces with more than 20 acres of parks, squares and promenades - the equivalent of around eight football pitches. Jubilee Park, which is the size of Trafalgar Square, is right outside our building.

Beyond work

We offer a wide range of activities that you can get involved in outside work. There is something for everyone and taking part gives you the opportunity to get to know people outside your immediate area of the firm.

There are many sports clubs that you can join. These include cricket, men's and women's football, rugby, netball, mixed hockey, golf, karate, softball, table tennis, squash and sailing. Many of the clubs run teams and organise regular matches against other firms.

The arts club organises outings to London galleries and museums, along with lunchtime talks by artists and curators. Membership is free, and from time to time members can take advantage of free tickets to exhibitions at leading museums such as Tate Britain and The Royal Academy.

Legal advisor to the Invictus Games Foundation

We are delighted to have been appointed as legal advisor to the Invictus Games Foundation ahead of the fifth Invictus Games taking place in The Hague, The Netherlands, in 2020. Founded by HRH The Duke of Sussex, the Invictus Games Foundation is the international charity that oversees the development of the Invictus Games, an international adaptive multi-sport event in which wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and veterans participate.

We welcome applications from former members of the Armed Forces, regular and reserve, and their families.

In 2017, Clifford Chance was the first magic circle law firm to sign the Armed Forces Covenant and has received a Bronze Employer Recognition Award from the Ministry of Defence. We have an active military network in London for ex-military, reservists and those with friends and family with military connections.

We meet regularly to socialise and to discuss ideas to promote the network. We collaborate with other organisations that support veterans and we are working with law firms across London to create a legal industry network to share ideas and to attract talent to the sector. If you are a reservist, or thinking about becoming a reservist, we will support you.

Supporting, developing and retaining diverse talent

We have a number of flourishing employee networks and a mental health advocate initiative championed by senior leaders, which help to engage our colleagues in diversity, inclusion and well-being. For example, our global managing partner Matthew Layton, was recognised on the FT's 2016 OUTstanding LGBT Allies list; Narind Singh, corporate partner, recognised on the FT's 2016 and 2017 OUTstanding LGBT Executive list and Habib Motani, partner and global head of our Derivatives practice and Chinwe Odimba-Chapman, partner TPE, were recognised in the 2018 EM Power List for ethnic minority leaders.

The London Women's Network

Our local women’s networks aim to support the career development of women at all levels by helping to recruit, retain and promote women and provide business opportunities through internal and external networking. Most recently, we ran a leadership series in London, seeing keynote speeches from Katherine Grainger and Margaret Heffernan, and a client panel event. We celebrate International Women's Day each year with a number of local events, often with a charitable initiative.

Arcus

Clifford Chance's global LGBT network, Arcus, is represented in many of our offices, including London, the Americas, Asia Pacific and some countries in Continental Europe. The purpose of the network is to foster an inclusive and integrated culture that gives colleagues the choice to be open and out, with a strong belief that it is such a culture that allows everyone to develop to their maximum potential. The firm was ranked 11th in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index in 2018 and achieved 100% in the HRC Corporate Equality Index. We have also recently signed up to the UN Business Standards on LGBTI.

BAME Network

The London BAME Network and the US Black and Latino subcommittee and the Asian and Pacific Islanders subcommittee assist in building a sense of community, by providing a platform to inspire, support and encourage colleagues, whilst also raising awareness and debate about issues specifically facing individuals from ethnic minority backgrounds. These groups are also involved in recruiting activities, and pro bono work for their respective communities. Following our recent "Cultivating Champions" event for senior leaders in London, we have initiated a reverse mentoring programme to further develop insight around key issues.

Community

As a firm we believe we have a responsibility not only to each other, but also to people in the communities where we are based. We look to make a positive impact through our pro bono, community, environment and arts programmes.
