SECONDED TO THE HOWARD LEAGUE

I have worked on a broad and varied portfolio of work ranging from the re-financing of one of London's biggest art houses, seeing a multi-million pound arbitration to the end and led alongside another trainee to advise a legal and public policy development programme working to convert into a charity.

Back to profiles

I joined the firm during the Covid-19 pandemic in August 2020 after four years at the University of Warwick and an exchange year at The University of Hong Kong. I then took six months out to work and travel before moving to London to complete the LLM CLP.

During my first seat, I sat in Structured Debt and Real Estate Finance, and then spent three months in Litigation & Dispute Resolution specialising in the arbitration side and three months on secondment to The Howard League. I am now currently on secondment within Global Financial Markets in our Amsterdam office.

One of the biggest attractions to Clifford Chance is the vast amount of opportunities available.

There is a lot of emphasis placed on harnessing a broad skillset and making the most of the opportunities presented to you during the two-year trainee programme.

These include international secondments and client secondments, the latter of which is split between our corporate clients and partner pro-bono clients.

My secondment to The Howard League for Penal Reform has been one of the best things about my Training Contract so far. They are the oldest criminal reform charity in the UK. It's office is in Dalston Junction and it is made up of a small team of lawyers, a huge contrast to working in the big London teams. This has meant that there has been a much higher level of responsibility expected.

In my first month, I was already presenting my ideas and findings to the team, I was tasked with drafting a letter to the Court of Appeal for an expedited listing and I submitted a formal final-stage complaint for lack of access to healthcare!

I am confident that this experience will allow me to be a much better lawyer than when I arrived. It is a unique experience where I am learning from inspiring, dedicated people with a real sense of purpose.
