Clifford Chance Academy

The Academy provides integrated training and continuous professional education to support you throughout your career.

The Academy delivers technical and business skills training to everyone in the firm, in person and online. We emphasise continuous professional development at every stage of your career, so training is available to all – trainees, graduates, lawyers, partners and business service teams alike.

The training and mentoring you receive will ensure that you are up-to-date with legal developments in the areas where you work and also that you develop business skills such as time management, communication and client relationship skills.

Tech Academy

The Tech Academy provides our people with online training and resources and a global programme of face-to-face workshops, ensuring we remain on top of the latest technology trends and issues our clients are facing. The portal houses a range of online training programmes and webinars, short summaries of key technologies and trends, a glossary of useful terms and links to other resources.

As well as the online site, the Tech Academy has hosted a series of workshops run by Collective Campus, the education and innovation consultancy based in Australia. These are full day training courses that have been held around the world on a range of topics, from e-commerce to artificial intelligence, blockchain, data privacy and cybersecurity.

Ongoing career development

The firm provides each individual with the framework and tools to take charge of their own development. Aside from the Academy offering, there is significant on-the-job learning no matter what your role will be, and we expect our staff to continue to embrace learning and knowledge with a curious and open attitude. We have cross-office mentorship programmes and regular appraisals which act as mileposts, enabling you to check in with your manager or partner to review your progress. Internal mobility is actively encouraged and many people at the firm have moved between teams and offices.

Resource management

All London practice areas have a dedicated resource manager who works both with associates and their career development partner (CDP) to develop each associate's capabilities, sector focuses and individual client relationships. The resource manager also ensures that all new joiners are integrated into the team through forward planning with the CDP and conversations with associates to understand their goals and prior experience when they join.

Resource managers have conversations with lawyers to understand their current and forecast busyness levels and what outside work commitments they may have, and to discuss their general well-being. With partners they will have regular conversations regarding new deals in the pipeline and work streams coming to an end. This helps to better identify, manage and meet client requirements; it promotes team working and helps with working across teams. The resource manager also tracks associate activity and highlights discrepancies where appropriate, and smoothes disparities in utilisation across the team.

Client and international secondments

Many of our associates have the opportunity to spend time on secondment at one of our international offices or at one of our clients.

Secondments allow you to gain valuable experiences and share working life with overseas colleagues or clients, thereby deepening relationships and strengthening bonds. You will be involved in their everyday work and discover either the elements of working in another jurisdiction or life as a client. It is an extremely rich experience that will bring you the inside view on how we develop local expertise and international standards; moreover in the case of international secondments, it is the chance to spend time in another country.
